Like the majority of the characters in the Saiyuki series, Kenren has his own innate sense of what constitutes justice and respect. Despite his easy-going and relaxed personality, he readily takes action when someone or something offends his values. Contrary to the "troublemaker" image he so casually portrays, he is actually compassionate deep down and does not hesitate to step forward to defend people when they are mistreated - this is shown several times throughout the series.
To people whom Kenren have no respect for, he - well - doesn't respect them. And he makes no secret of it, often openly provoking them with fleeting comments and his trademark "come and get me" smirk. This causes him to be quite unpopular with the higher ranking gods who despise his rebellious attitude as well as his crude manner of speaking whatever is on his mind
However, even though Kenren doesn't act like a responsible military general for the most part, he is, undeniably, largely respected amongst the subordinates who are loyal to him. People who are closest to Kenren know him as an individual who's actually soft-hearted, carefree, and just a bit boastful of his looks and ability. He is also frequently thought of as "stupid" due to his tendency to take reckless actions without first thinking of the consequences.
