Goku
A Bump of Fate
| Goku: Uh...sorry! Kenren: Golden eyes...? |

The way Kenren met Goku was actually quite accidental. Kenren was just rounding the corner when Goku came hurtling out of nowhere and smashed headfirst into him. Both were surprised - Goku innocently so and Kenren upon of observing Goku's golden eyes - the eyes of a heretical being.

Goku: Okay, bye! Kenren: Oi, kid. Goku: OUCH! What are you doing?! |
At first, Goku must have thought that Kenren looked intimidating because he immediately tries to dash away before Kenren could get a word in. However, Kenren snatches him by the hair and pulls him back to get a closer look.
| Kenren: Are you the one that Tenpou is always talking about named "Goku", who is under the care of Konzen? Goku: Eh? Oji-san, you're Ten-chan's friend? Kenren: Don't call me "oji-san"!! I'm still young! |

Kenren asks Goku if he's the same person he's been hearing rumors about and Goku warms up when he hears that Kenren knows Tenpou - or, rather, affectionately known as "Ten-chan". Then Goku politely calls Kenren "oji-san", meaning uncle or older gentleman, and Kenren complains that he's not old enough to be referred to as "oji-san". Already, these two seem to be on friendly terms!
My Secret Son

Guard: This kid, he was wandering around Tentei's castle without permission. But, I have no idea how he sneaked in though. Kenren: Hmm...it's okay! |
A moment later, two guards come running up with the intention of escorting Goku out of the castle because of trespassing. Goku, clearly trusting Kenren now, scoots behind him to hide and peers out anxiously, wondering if he would get in trouble. Never the stickler for rules and noting the nervousness on Goku's face, Kenren shrugs the guards' words off casually.
| Guard: Huh? Do you know him? Kenren: Or rather...he's my secret son! Guards: WHAT?! Ken-KENREN TAISHOU?! |

Now comes one of the funniest scenes in Saiyuki Gaiden. When the guards ask if Kenren was acquainted with Goku, he puts his arm around Goku's shoulders, pulls him close, and replies with a smirk that, in actuality, Goku is his illegitimate child! Goku is innocently unaware of the implications of Kenren's comment. But the guards are stunned and dumbfounded by this declaration as Kenren leads Goku away, laughing at the ruse he started.
Shining Innocence

Kenren: Did you just say...Nataku? Is it Nataku Taishi? Goku: Yeah! He's my friend! Before that, when I met him, I didn't have a name. Now that I have one, I really want to tell him my name! Kenren: ...Ah...a friend to the "killing puppet". |
Afterwards, Kenren questions Goku about why he wasn't at Konzen's castle and Goku cheerfully replies that he was out looking for his friend, Nakatu. Even though Kenren expresses no surprise at the statement, he muses aloud over Goku's innocent declaration of friendship with the infamous "killing puppet".
| Kenren: Aren't you TOO heavy? Goku: Huh? Ah, yeah. 'Cause these are on me, that's why. Kenren: These shackles - doesn't one of these weigh around 20 kilograms?! This kid can actually move around so easily with all this stuff on him?! Are all golden-eyed creatures as dangerous as this fella? |

No doubt the shackles around Goku's neck, wrists, and ankles had been bothering Kenren because, in the middle of their conversation, Kenren suddenly swoops down and tries to lift the little Goku up. To his utmost shock, Kenren couldn't budge him. And even more amazing is that Goku seemed unfazed by the multiple restraints on his body. However, Kenren wonders whether this type of harsh treatment is really necessary for the innocent-looking boy.
